Rebecca Wilkinson

Rebecca Wilkinson recently completed a very successful show at the Westport Art Fair September 18, 1999 and after traveling the world, Rebecca has settled in Kansas City in a loft in the old market area with a studio nearby where she will continue to concentrate on her painting.

The current exhibition at the Muchnic Gallery features Ancestors, Landscapes, and Rain Forests and includes a three dimensional rain forest created in the turret gallery. Ms. Wilkinson's Rain Forest Collection is the result of a trip to Belize in 1993, which was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Since that trip, her work has centered on rain forest destruction and the species that are endangered as a result of it. This past summer she received a grant from the Kansas Arts Commission to return to Central America to paint rain forest themes, this time, to Costa Rica. Her purpose was to continue to develop her collage technique of bringing the flora out of the picture plane toward the viewer onto the mat. By doing so, she better conveys the life force one feels in a rain forest.

The ancestors who are featured in a series of large oils are from her past and are intended to compliment a book being written by her father. The landscape and floral work is centered very much in the present with the intention to evoke an immediate response.
