April 22, 2006 - 9:00am to 4:00pm
May 21, 2006

If you've ever wanted to see George Seurat's famous masterpiece "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" but never found the time to go to Chicago, you're in luck. From April 22 - May 21 as part of the Sister Helen Student Arts Awards Exhibit, the Muchnic Gallery will have on display a life size (8' x 10') replica done by Bert Nash School Art students and their Instructor Mike Farrell.  Bert Nash is in 409 school district and is the on campus school for the Atchison Juvenile Correctional Facility.

Mr. Farrell and his students have been working on the picture for about two years.  "This has been a long term project.  We've been working on it for quite a while.  Some of the original students who started the picture have gotten out and have gone home,"Mr. Farrell said.  "It's been a rewarding project.  The students learned how to enlarge a picture to mural size and they increased their sense of color and value and even were exposed to a little Art History."

The Carlsons
Don, Mim, and Ralph Carlson have been playing old time and traditional folk
music in the area for many years.  Get ready to listen and sing along to
some great fiddle tunes, old time country and maybe a few gospel numbers.

11:00 am.
Hazel Whyte

www.hazelwhyte.com
Born in the historical town of Paisley on the west coast of Scotland, folk
singer Hazel Whyte's first musical influence was her mother's nightly
lullaby. Encouraged to continue singing as a child, Hazel was a member of
several competition choirs. As a young adult, Hazel took up the guitar and
soon found herself singing in the musical duo Traprain. Hazel has enjoyed
performing in various folk clubs throughout Scotland and Europe.  Since
arriving in Kansas City last July, Hazel can be seen weekly at the Bickering
Tree in Raytown. She is also very honored to have shared some stage time
with the irrepressible Bob Reeder, the unforgettable Eddie Delahunt and the
world famous Tom Dahill.

12:00 Noon.
Tenley Hansen and Michael Frazer
Michael and Tenley have discovered a shared passion in the performance of
traditional acoustic music. Michael Fraser is a fiddler. His style has been
described as "driving and dancy"! He studied southern style old time fiddle
for two years under the late Bob Holt who was winner of the Smithsonian
National Heritage Fellowship Award.
Tenley Hansen brings a wealth of talent to the stage where she performs
primarily on piano and vocals but will occasionally pick up the fiddle or
bohdran. Her training and degree in the performing arts provides a nice
touch to the contrasting "In Yer Face" fiddling flying through the
microphone from the other side of the stage.

1:00 pm.
Mark Twain’s Dog

http://www.marktwainsdog.com/
Mark Twain’s Dog is the songwriting team of Ken Zans and Gerry Monks.
Returning for a second year at the fair, Mark Twain’s Dog is an acoustic duo
based in Kansas City that leans heavily towards modern folk and Americana.
But this mutt ain’t no purebred! Leave the back gate open and he’ll dart out
and wander the entire neighborhood, stopping to watch a car pass by with the
radio on, then on to the harbor, for a little sea chantey.
Singer/songwriter Ken Zans started performing in Texas. While attending
college in Austin, he played everywhere from coffeehouses at the local
church to bars along “the drag,” honing his writing skills and catching
local artists Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker and Alan Ramsey at local clubs.
“I’ve always liked songwriters who are poets as well,” Ken says, “writers
who can really turn a phrase.”  Singer/songwriter Gerry Monks started
performing in garage bands in high school in Kansas. He played guitar, bass
and sang in various cover bands and was an award-winning jazz bassist in
college. Like Ken, his solo performance experience began in church
coffeehouses, while he learned the craft of songwriting by listening to
everyone from the Beatles to James Taylor, Elton John, Peter Gabriel and
everything in-between.

2:00 pm.
Charisse & Steve Kahler
http://charisselowe.com/

Also back for a second year at the festival, the Kahlers are a great
acoustic duo that received rave reviews last year.   Charisse Kahler's music
is a composite of many styles and influences. A self-taught guitarist,
Charisse initially played traditional folk music stamped with her own
personal touch. Over the years she has evolved into a stunning
singer/songwriter unconstrained by genre or musical style. While living in
Boston she opened for Jimmy Buffet and Eric Anderson at the legendary Passim
Coffeehouse. More recently she has opened for Greg Brown, the late Mickey
Newbury, and  Maura O'Connell.

3:00 pm.
Tullamore
http://www.omniventure.com/tullamore/
Now in their ninth season, Tullamore numbers among the Heartland's premiere
Celtic bands and a favorite at O'Malley Pub in Weston, MO.  Mark Clavey,
Mary Hanover and Rachel Gaither render the music of Ireland and Scotland in
compelling vocals and vibrant instrumentation. The Kansas City trio draws
from diverse musical experiences to strike a remarkable poise on the
traditional and progressive fronts. Their dynamic arrangements appeal to
mainstream audiences, yet remain loyal to the soul of Celtic music.   From
the Rocky mountains to the Ohio Valley, Tullamore enjoys a regular fare of
Irish festivals, Scottish Highland games and folk festivals, as well as the
grassroots intimacy of pubs, coffeehouse crowds and university folk clubs.

4:00 pm.
Glenfinnan
http://www.kansasscot.com/

Glenfinnan the band is named after a small village in western Scotland
notorious for two things- being the place that Bonnie Prince Charlie raised
the royal standard in the 1745 rebellion, and the beautiful railway viaduct
in the Harry Potter films.   The band is made up of:  Ian Hall- Edinburgh
born, Scots and proud of it. Vocals, guitar, whistle/flute, bodhran,
percussion.  Karla Hall- Vocals, guitar, mandolin, bouzouki. Rich
Stevenson-Emmett,  Ks based with Irish blood. Vocals, guitar, percussion,
Irish pipes. And Lucas Stevenson-Rich's son. Vocals, guitar, bouzouki and
bass.  Expect to hear a great mix of Celtic (Scots/Irish) music and songs,
and eclectic Contemporary Music with a Celtic twist. Its not unusual to hear
a 1700's Irish rebel ballad followed by a Celtic Pink Floyd medley!

Saturday 1:30 - 3:00 pm
Squire Building
Kaw Valley Shape Note Singers
http://www.kansasfolk.org/shapenote
The Kaw Valley Shape Note Singers have been singing together in Lawrence, KS
every month since 1993. We encourage you to come join us or simply come and
have a listen.   Shape note music is an early American form of
community-based folk singing. It was first used by itinerant “singing
masters” to teach the colonists how to sight-read music. The music also
provided opportunities for fellowship and participative entertainment.  By
the early 1900s, this music could only be heard in remote areas of the
South, but with the resurgence of folk music in the 1960s and 1970s, it has
experienced a remarkable revival. Most recently, it was featured in the 2003
movie Cold Mountain.   The music is not about performance, but rather
participation; consequently, there is no emphasis on blending, tonal
quality, dynamics or other characteristics associated with
performance-oriented choral music. This is the "people's music" and
beginners are always welcome.

Tom Meehan lives in St Joseph, MO.    He has been performing for a number of

bring a tear to your eye one minute and have your toes tapping the next.

influenced by the singer/songwriter types such as Gordon Lightfoot, John
Denver, Jim Croce, James Taylor, Simon, Dylan...etc. He began writing songs
sometime in the mid seventies and has never stopped. He plays his original
music with an occasional cover of Jimmy Buffet or John Prine. He is an
accomplished poet, actor, director, and designer, and is the head of Theatre
Arts at Benedictine College. He wishes to acknowledge his biggest fan,
Patricia, his wife of 21 years. He also wants to thank Texas for the
opportunity to have grown up there. "It's growing up in Texas that made a
songwriter out of me." Judge for yourself.

David Hakan
http://www.davidhakan.com/
David Hakan is a singer/songwriter creating original acoustic music in
Kansas City, Missouri. He is a co-founder of the Songwriters Circle of
Kansas City.  His vocals remind some of John Denver. His great story songs
remind some of John Prine or John Gorka. The title cut of his first CD, In
Midtown, is a humorous look at all of the "creative, unique, artistic and
cantankerous" people who live in the Kansas City Midtown area.   David’s
third and current CD, Loose Upon The Street, takes you from the driving
guitar riffs of The Getaway to the healing vibrations of Home Cooking.  Fans
call this his strongest album yet.

2:00 PM
Kasey Rausch
http://www.myspace.com/kaseyrausch
Kasey was born in Kansas City, but raised in a small town in East Texas. As
a child, every summer she made her pilgrimage to the mid-west to join her
family and sit in with her uncles, grandparents, and long-time friends of
the family as music was made in to the wee hours of the morning. She has
never known life without music. Likewise, her music takes on a great life.
Her first full-length recording, "Born Near the Waters . . ." was recorded
over 3 days in July 2004 at the 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor in New Orleans with
Mike West. It was self-realeased on RauschHouse Records in November 2004.
Kasey is currently working on her next record, once again with Mike West, at
the 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor (now relocated in Lawrence, Kansas.)

singer/songwriter Kathy Forste and guitarist/songwriter Gordon Hobbs.  Kathy
is a poetic singer/songwriter from Kansas City, Missouri. Her music has been
described as gutsy folk/rock/blues and her voice been compared as a cross
between Mary-Chapin Carpenter and Janis Joplin. Gordon is an inventive
finger-style guitarist/songwriter.   Kathy started writing songs when she
was 7, started playing guitar at age 13, graduated with a minor in music and
has been playing solo and in bands for the last 8 years. Gordon has been
playing guitar in some band or another since he was fourteen. His style of
playing is a combination of finger-picking and flat-picking. He comes up
with some of the most memorable and creative riffs you'll ever hear.
