October 31, 2007
Carla Hanson’s Spirit of the Mask Collection was one of the most popular shows of the year in 2006 and it is back this fall with all new masks. From September 7 to October 31, The Muchnic Gallery will host this exhibition. There is an opening reception set for Friday, September 14 from five to seven p.m. Carla Hanson will be available to discuss her collection. The masks being exhibited are from 30 different countries on five different continents and from nine Native American Nations. Dating from the 1900’s to the present, these masks can be viewed not only as cultural symbols but also as beautiful works of art. Ms. Hanson’s masks tell stories of art, culture and beliefs from around the world. “Every country in the world has had a mask making tradition,” Ms. Hanson said, “I think they’re really important to show off different cultures.” According to Ms. Hanson, visitors will see “Death masks to send the newly departed spirit on it’s journey; healing masks to make people feel better; ancestral masks to honor forefathers;; fertility masks to get red of winter and bring good crops; religious masks to add to the sacred ceremonies; and celebration masks to wear for those festive moments.” Besides masks, Hanson buys books about them. The more she learns about masks and their cultural uses, the more she likes them. She has a great story about every one of her masks each one is accompanied by notes that include tales about how they were acquired, where it came from and how it would have been used in its native environment.
