Layers Revealed: The Art of John Vanderpool - May 16 - June 29, 2008

Begin with a well-textured canvas, cover with flat house paint, allow time to dry, illustrate the lines of the subject matter with colored pencils - blur the lines with paint thinner, allow more dry time, create form with oil pastels and finally chalk pastels - and still more paint thinner if needed. Thus John Vanderpool outlines the technical process, which leads to the richly layered
and vibrant images he creates. The exhibit at the Muchnic Gallery opens with a reception
for the artist Friday, May 16 from 5 – 7 p.m.

Mr. Vanderpool characterizes his style as impressionistic, while others have likened the finished pieces to batik - a wax-resist dyeing method used to create textiles in Indonesia, as well as parts of the Asian subcontinent and parts of West Africa. Mr. Vanderpool counts Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida among his favorite artists. For subject matter, Mr. Vanderpool draws from his collections of old photo postcards, vintage clothing, antique dolls and old family albums, as well as a more recent interest,
his iris garden. Mr. Vanderpool lives and works in Erie, Co.

Historic military paintings by J. D. Nelson and period photographs by Ival Lawhon from the Vietnam War era
James Davis Nelson and Ival Lawhon, Jr. served together in Vietnam between 1967 – 68 with the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment (Mech), 25th Infantry Division, of the United States Army. This exhibit represents the shared experiences of two young soldiers, memorializes those comrades who did not survive, and conveys the matured perspective of two men now forty years further into their lives. The Atchison Art Association will host a reception honoring the artists at the Muchnic Gallery Friday, November 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.

J. D. (Jim) Nelson was born in Beloit, Kan. in 1943. His father was a professor of philosophy; his mother a violinist. Mr. Nelson started to paint at age fourteen, later won a Ford Foundation grant and began fine art studies at the Art Student’s League in New York in 1962.
He was employed as a mural painter for the renowned industrial design firm Raymond Lowey, Inc. and was working in a studio on New York’s Fifth Avenue when in 1967 Mr. Nelson was drafted.

Highlighting the 2007 Riverbend Art Fair is an exhibit of work by Saint Joseph, Mo. artist Dorothy Maginn. The show will include examples of Mrs. Maginn’s work in acrylic, oil, charcoal and mixed media created over the previous thirty-five years.
The exhibit at the Muchnic Gallery opens with a reception for the artist Wednesday, May 23 from 5 – 7 p.m.

Describing her work, Mrs. Maginn said, “I have tried painting peaches and pears and such…, but my work leans to the abstract.”
She hopes the work will provoke an emotional connection from the viewer. Mrs. Maginn added, “It has been said that everything (her art) suggests a point of mind at which life and death are real and imaginary, and that past and future, height and depth, come together.”

Originating as black and white photographs, the line prints featured in this exhibit are created with a technique called the “Sabattier Effect.” The original continuous-tone camera image has been destroyed, and replaced with a second image, which produces a fine outline of the most minute details of the original scene. The Mansion Series collects images of regional architecture, including two Atchison homes.

Muchnic Gallery Features “Seurat” by Bert Nash Students

If you've ever wanted to see George Seurat's famous masterpiece "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" but never found the time to go to Chicago, you're in luck. From April 22 - May 21 as part of the Sister Helen Student Arts Awards Exhibit, the Muchnic Gallery will have on display a life size (8' x 10') replica done by Bert Nash School Art students and their
Instructor Mike Farrell.  Bert Nash is in 409 school district and is
the on campus school for the Atchison Juvenile Correctional Facility.Â

Mr. Farrell and his students have been working on the picture for about two years.  "This has been a long term project.  We've been working on it for quite a while.  Some of the original students who started the picture have gotten out and have gone home,"Mr. Farrell said.  "It's been a rewarding project.  The students learned how to enlarge a picture to mural size and they increased their sense of color and value and even were exposed to a little Art History."
Â

Radioactive Day by Robin VanHoozer

	Event Date:
	November 14, 2005 - 8:00am to 4:00pm

		Event Ends: December 31, 2005

Radioactive Day is currently on exhibit at the Muchnic Gallery in Atchison. Robin VanHoozer is a native Missourian and thriving artist. Her work has recently been displayed on national television during a May 2005 episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The exhibition will be open from November to the end of Decemeber 2005.

Artist's Statement

Whimsical paintings created with both abstract and figurative imagery combines in a unique way in my work. Abstract backgrounds surround more figurative elements of figures, game pieces, fireworks, and noisemakers. Oil painting and encaustic (melted wax) painting techniques are used. Encaustic painting technique uses melted beeswax with pigment and damar varnish. Heat is used to fuse the wax layers together. Large-scale oil paintings, encaustic paintings, and installation pieces continue the ideas generated in part by photographs that I have taken, only on a larger scale. Objects such as beads, fireworks, and bits of glass add a collage element to some pieces. A nostalgic feel with a present day kick gives my paintings an unusual and different visual combination.
